Theological Education Options at Baptist Seminary at Richmond

BTSR prepares men and women who are called and committed to Christian ministry. Advanced theological education is provided through a Master of Divinity program with concentration options in Christian Education, Church Music, Youth & Student Ministries, and Children & Family Ministries. Dual degree programs in Social Work and Patient Counseling are also offered, as well as, a Doctor of Ministry degree. Numerous Distance Learning courses are offered online. Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.

Theological Education: Master of Divinity

The Master of Divinity degree is the basic graduate degree in theological education. Through required courses and guided electives, students develop theological understandings and competencies that prepare them to serve in a variety of ministries. They learn about the historical, biblical and theological foundations of the Christian faith. Students are encouraged to align their interests and gifts with their chosen course of study.

Students can select from four recognized concentration areas in our Master of Divinity degree: Christian Education, Youth & Student Ministries, and Children & Family Ministries. There also are numerous opportunities for students to focus their electives in a specific area with the MDiv program. To learn more about these concentrations, begin on page 47 of our course catalog (PDF).

Theological Education: Doctor of Ministry

The primary purpose of the Doctor of Ministry degree is to provide an additional three years of applied academic preparation beyond the Master of Divinity for Christian leadership in pastoral and educational ministries. The Doctor of Ministry is an advanced professional degree program for those who have completed a MDiv and are currently engaged in ministry.

The Doctor of Ministry degree program offers a broad base of knowledge and gives students the opportunity to concentrate on one of the following areas as part of their study: Christian Education, Christian Mission, Pastoral Care, Pastoral Counseling, Preaching, Spirituality, and Worship.
