In Virginia and the neighboring states of North Carolina and Maryland, more than 5,500 Baptist churches provide students opportunities for service. The International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and the offices of the Baptist General Association of Virginia are located in Richmond.
It is appropriate that in Virginia, the cradle of religious freedom, Baptists have established a seminary where historic Baptist principles are cherished and taught.

Theological Consortiums
BTSR is a member of the Richmond Theological Consortium (RTC), which also includes Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Union-PSCE) and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University (STVU) both located in Richmond, Virginia. This provides for cross-educational opportunities and the coordination of student activities and academic resources across the three schools.
BTSR is also a member of the Washington Theological Consortium (WTC) a community of twelve theological institutions of diverse Christian traditions including Methodist, Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, and Presbyterian. Students at member institutions may cross-register for courses at any other member institutions. They also enjoy full-reciprocal library privileges.
