M.Div. with a Concentration in Justice and Peacebuilding

 

The M.Div. with a concentration in Justice and Peacebuilding helps meet the ethos and values of the seminary in issues of justice and peacebuilding. This degree concentration is in partnership with the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA (http://www.emu.edu/cjp/). Students in this concentration will complete the required course of study for the concentration at BTSR. The concentration components for this concentration will reside primarily with the summer institute of the Center, an accredited program with a world-class reputation and an established record of leadership in the field of justice and peacebuilding. The program includes students from over 50 countries representing many cultures.

 

Students enrolled in the M.Div./JP concentration will take required courses that satisfy the M.Div. degree program goal and standards. The concentration components in justice and peacebuilding will primarily be attained through the CJP in its Summer Peacebuilding Institute (SPI) and related curricular coursework in addition to integrative program components at BTSR. The CJP describes its program as, “Intended for people active in peacebuilding and related fields, SPI offers four 7-day sessions, each with a number of courses running concurrently.” Students will need to apply directly to the CJP, be accepted into the program and comply will the program requirements of the CJP in order to satisfy the concentration requirements.

 

Concentration Program Goals:

 

1. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of biblical interpretation, ethics, Christian tradition and theology, and communicate this understanding in a meaningful way.

 

2. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding, appreciation, and skills in justice and peacebuilding, with emphases in restorative justice, and/or conflict resolution.

 

3. Students will be able to demonstrate integration of learning related to the biblical, theological, and historical perspectives with ministries of justice and peacebuilding, restorative justice, and conflict resolution.

Students may choose the remaining courses in following areas: Trauma, Faith-Based Peacebuilding, Restorative Justice, Development, Organizational Leadership.Students may also choose to complete an additional course (a total of five (15 credits))for the Graduate Certificate from the CJP. The CJP summer institute meets from May to June with four 7-day sessions.

Total semester hours: 85 required semester hour credits for completion
