Dr. Tracy Hartman
Our call to BTSR was similar to that of many of the students in the first entering class in the fall of 1991. My husband and I had been studying at an SBC seminary. When we began our studies in 1989, our pastor had told us that good changes had been occurring at the seminaries, but our experience had been quite different. We were intrigued with the new moderate seminary opening in Richmond, so we came to visit. After much discussion, deliberation, and prayer, we determined that God was leading us to become a part of this new community. We remember standing in the opening convocation, tears on our cheeks, feeling like we had found a home.
At BTSR, I was fully empowered and encouraged as a woman in ministry. Professors became mentors and friends, helping me discern my call and explore all options. As I continued in my M.Div. program, the call to teach became clear. After BTSR, I went on to complete a Ph.D. in Practical Theology. Near the end of that journey, I began to seek and pray for a place to serve. I had often dreamed about returning to teach at BTSR, and I was delighted when that dream became a reality in 2001. It is a privilege to give back to the community that has given me so much.
